utocrossed the FR-S for the first time today. Yes, I autocrossed a car within the first 48 hours of ownership.
This thing is incredible. It is easily the most controllable car I’ve ever thrown around a course, even on these shitty tires. It was loose but I never really felt out of control. When the tail steps out the steering is so quick and communicates so well that it just takes an easy correction to keep it from spinning.
It was a test and tune event so I’m sure not everyone was pushing it too hard, but I was still putting down solid times in spite of the tires. Tomorrow we have a full points event, so I can see how it compares a bit better.
Overall though: 12/10 amazing chassis definitely off to a good start

Oh shit - my lawyer brain just clicked on. I’m guessing track use doesn’t void a warranty, but check with your insurance company. You might have to add that to make sure you’re covered for everything.
Can you imagine what it’s like to walk around all day thinking about liability?

So you did rid yourself of the mustang?

Welcome to the club. After I bought mine, 4 of my autox friends traded in their WRX’s for BRZ’s within 2 months. You’ll be even happier with some sticky tires. I remember my first autox with mine (5 days after purchase) and I spent most of the event giggling.

Many years ago, I bought an S2000 and took it to a private track day 4 days later. Having only tracked or raced FWD/AWD cars up to that point, it took precisely 5 turns before I looped it hard into the dirt. Oops, but least there wasn’t a wall there to hit!

So what you’re finally saying is... power isn’t everything?

I know you can buy track day insurance (Haggerty even has an app for this which makes it easy ) but I’m sure not telling my insurance agent I race my street car.

I looked back and set that you got a 2015. Planning on going with DS for a while or switching to SSC and making all of the tweaks?

DS for a while with eyes towards ssc

Missed the post about buying this, so congrats, and glad you’re enjoying it. Toyobarus have been some of the most consistently enjoyable autocross cars I’ve had to work with so far. They communicate well, they rotate well, and being able to play so easily at (or occasionally beyond) the edge of adhesion is immensely satisfying.
Things get even better once the sticky tires and front sway bar go on
. Just make sure you grab some OEM crash (camber)
bolts as well (
which are
only available / DS-
legal for the front if memory serves)
. You’re going to want every fraction of a degree you can get to slow the inevitable
demise of the outside edges of your tires.
